By Sandy Lenhart

The origin of the Hand of Fatima symbolism is actually unknown but its meaning descends from ancient times up to the present generation. Its literal meaning comes from the Arabic word chamsa, hamsa or khamsa meaning five and Fatima in reference to the daughter of Mohammed. The other name for it is in Jewish, Hand of Miriam, which refers to the sister of Moses and Aaron.

The meaning of the Hand of Fatima has many variations. It is referred to as the “God’s Hand”. In various regions including the Middle East, it is a sacred symbol of God’s hand in the earth. This relates to the belief that God existence is in everything. Another meaning of this symbol relates to the sky god, Horus. It refers to the eye of Horus, which means man cannot escape from the eye of conscience. It says that the sun and moon are the eyes of Horus. Hand of Fatima also represents femininity. It is referred as the woman’s holy hand. It is believe to be have extraordinary powers uses to protect people from the evil eye and other dangers. As symbol of femininity, the hand of Fatima has transcended to main feminine figure thus becoming the symbol of Virgin Mary for Christianity and Fatima for Islam.

Whatever meaning or representation it has, the Hand of Fatima remains to be an important part of the ancient history that continues to inspire many people today. People have adopted the symbol in every culture and it is now worn around the world as Hand of Fatima necklace and pendants and other Hamsa jewelry and even as Hand of Fatima tattoos.

The Secrets of Fatima

We post this article on Our Lady of Fatima here on the site as some visitors to our site come here seeking information on Our Lady of Fatima. Let us be clear at the outset that there is no connection between the Hand of Fatima and the Secrets of Fatima or the appearance of the Virgin Mary at Fatima.

In May, 1917 in Fatima, Portugal the Virgin Mary made a miraculous appearance to three young children. These children were Lucia Santos and her cousins, Jacinta and Francesco Marto. This was the first is a series of apparitions made by the Blessed Mother at Fatima. When she made her first appearance to the children, the Virgin Mary told them she was from heaven and asked them to do penance and pray the rosary daily for peace and an end to war – this was during World War I. She told them that she would return and reveal her identity to them.

When she appeared to the children again, Mary asked them to pray for souls in purgatory and to say this prayer at the end of each decade of the rosary with the intention of saving souls, “Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy.”

On July 13, 1917 Our Lady of Fatima revealed to Lucia, Jacinta, and Francesco the three Secrets of Fatima involving hell and a prophecy about Russia. These Secrets of Fatima were not to be wholly revealed for many years. The Virgin Mary asked the children to make sacrifices in reparation for sinners and in devotion to her Immaculate Heart. The Blessed Mother asked them to recite this prayer: “O Jesus, this is for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.”

The Virgin Mary appeared again to the children on August 13, 1917, and requested that a shrine and chapel to be built in honor of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, and for a procession in which a statue of the Virgin Mary would be carried to the chapel. Again Mary requested prayers and rosaries offered especially for the souls in purgatory. She told the children that many souls are lost because no one prays for them.

When Our Lady appeared on September 13, she again asked the children to pray the rosary and continue to offer sacrifice for sinners. She promised that when she appeared in October that Jesus and St. Joseph would appear to them and bless the world. She also promised that a great miracle would appear.

Last Appearance of Our Lady of Fatima

Finally, on October 13, 1917, Our Lady of Fatima appeared in the midst of a great crowd of almost 100,000 people on a hill in a large field in the city of Fatima in Portugal. The crowd was gathered in pouring rain under umbrellas and were focused on the children in great anticipation. Many reporters and photographers were gathered among them. Then, as the rain stopped, the sun began to spin around in the sky, change colors, pulse like a heart, and seem to be falling to the earth. Witnesses later said that the sun appeared to be”dancing in the sky”. All eyes were on the miraculous view, looking toward the skies when Our Lady of Fatima made her appearance. The children asked the beautiful lady her name and she told them she was Our Lady of the Rosary. After Our Lady disappeared the children saw the Child Jesus with St. Joseph in the sky as they blessed the world, making the sign of the cross. Then they saw Mary appear again and she requested that a chapel be built in Fatima for devotion to the rosary.

Lucia Santos entered a convent school at the age of 14 and later became a nun, dying at her convent in 2005 at the age of 97. She was forbidden by Rome to speak of the appearances of the Virgin Mary at Fatima or reveal the Secrets of Fatima. She is expected to be beatified in several years as the process has already begun at the direction of Pope John Paul.

Today Our Lady of Fatima has attracted a significant following and Lady of Fatima pendants, icons and rosaries are popular items with which to focus upon their devotion.

The Hand of Fatima Movie Summary

Filmed in Morocco, The Hand of Fatima movie tells the adventure of music analyzer NY Times Robert Palmer’s relationship with an allegorical Sufi group known as the Master Musicians of Jajouka. Lured by the Master Musicians fictionalized story by William Burroughs and aided by the recordings of Rolling Stone group member, Brian Jones recorded their music, Palmer first visited Jajouka in 1971 on an assignment for Rolling Stone magazine. He met with Ornette Coleman in 1973, and was adopted by the leaders of what Timothy Leary alleged “a four thousand year old bedrock band.” Filmmaker Augusta Palmer examines the legends accustomed by Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and Stephen Davis (Jajouka Rolling Stone) by interviewing the bandage in their limited apple and a host of acclaimed admirers of the Master Musicians and Robert Palmer, whose book Deep Blues is a seminal history of American accepted music. The Hand of Fatima movie is a film well worth watching for those with an interest in either the musical genre or personalities involved.

Hand of Fatima Tattoo Symbolism

By Sandy Lenhart

Some of the common and recurrently done tattoos around the world are religious symbols. Nevertheless in addition to tattoos that are exceptionally recognized with explicit beliefs, there is another group of symbols which tend to be claimed by several groups and whose meanings are not so much about religion as they are about protection from evil. The Eye of Horus, associated with the ancient Egyptians, is one such symbol and so also is the Hamsa, also known as the Hand of Fatima. The word hamsa or khamsa or chamsa is literally the number five in Arabic while Fatima is the Prophet Muhammad’s favorite daughter.

The hand of Fatima symbol is known all over the Mediterranean region and the Islamic world as a sign of good fortune. It is exclusively used to avert the evil eye, and has also been used to symbolize the support group, and even the blood revenge group. Its bilaterally symmetrical form is often worn as jewelry in various ornaments such as a Hand of Fatima necklace, amulets, pendants, etc. and would frequently be set with a stone in the center of the palm. Today, many people have taken to using the icon in Hand of Fatima tattoos. In today’s variation, however, the influence of Judaism is at work because the hamsa is also a symbol that has been used as a talisman by Sephardic Jews. They are the Sephardim group who suffered persecution and finally a mass expulsion from Spain and Portugal in the late 15th century. Actually, the Hebrew word for Spain is Sefarad. In the end these people were to flee to many parts of Europe and the Mediterranean, including France, North Africa, Holland, England, Italy, and the Balkans, taking the Hamsa and its protection from the evil eye, danger, sickness, and all manner of bad luck, with them. A Hand of Fatima tattoo is not just a fashion statement, it is a powerful symbol of protection.

The Hand of Fatima Tattoo is just another variation of the hamsa symbol and has always been believed to protect the bearer from danger and sickness.

Protection Against The Evil Eye

The evil eye is a malevolent look or stare that is believed in some cultures to cause bad luck, injury or even death for those it is directed at. The evil eye can also refer to the power some are believed to have to inflict harm by the power of their evil stare.

Because of the fear of many of the evil eye some cultures developed protections against the evil eye. Attempts to ward off the evil eye has resulted in a number of amulets and talismans believed to offer evil eye protection. in many cultures. The proper term for them are class, “apotropaic talismans”. The Hamsa hand or Hand of Fatima charm is believed to be a particularly powerful protection against the evil eye. A blue eye can often be found in the center of the hamsa hand or Hand of Fatima, this is most commonly seen in the Middle East. The word hamsa, also spelled khamsa chamsa and hamesh, means “five” and refers to the five fingers of the hand. In Jewish culture, the hamsa is called the Hand of Miriam; in Muslim culture, the Hand of Fatima.

The hamsa hand is believed to offer the greatest evil eye protection when used as a symbol above the entrances to homes and interior rooms and when worn as hamsa jewelry. Hamsa hand or Hand of Fatima necklaces and Hand of Fatima pendants are often worn by those seeking evil eye protection. Some have even gone so far as to get a Hand of Fatima tattoo in their desire for evil eye protection.

Even the ancient Greeks believed in the power of the evil eye. Some speculate that Socrates had the power of the evil eye and that his disciples were mesmerized by Socrates’ darkly glaring eyes. In the Greco-Roman era a scientific explanation of the evil eye was popular. Plutarch put forth the scientific explanation that a persons eyes were the chief source of deadly rays which sprang up like poisoned darts from the soul of a person possessed of the evil eye. In Roman times whole tribes, not just individuals, were thought to have the power of the evil eye – particularly the tribes of Pontus and Scythia.

Belief in the power of the evil eye is found throughout the world but is strongest in the Middle East, Africa, Central America, South Asia, Central Asia, and Europe, particularly the Mediterranean region. Not surprisingly it is in these societies that evil eye protection is most sought. Belief in the evil eye finds corroboration in Islamic teaching based upon a statement of the Prophet Muhammad, “The influence of an evil eye is a fact…” [Sahih Muslim, Book 26, Number 5427].

For those seeking evil eye protection today, a Hand of Fatima necklace or Hand of Fatima pendant are held in high regard by many as protecting them against the powers of the evil eye. Hand of Fatima jewelry can also be quite striking and stylish and is worn by some simply as a fashion statement without thoughts of evil eye protection. More information on the evil eye can be found at Wikipedia.

Islam tells us the story of the daughter of the prophet Muhammad; Fatima who was in the midst of an advancing aliment and was afraid by the aboriginal acknowledgment of her bed mate Prophet Ali one day. His abrupt acknowledgment was due to the accession of a gorgeous, adolescent concubine. Fatima was heartsick but hid her feelings and prepared the ancestors meal. She was making Halva, a candied desert made with sesame seeds, on a hot frying pan and afflicted by the image of her bed mate and his new concubine caused her to be absent minded.

Fatima Hand Symbol or Hamsa

Fatima hand is a mystical symbol with an interesting story since it combines mysticism, spiritual beliefs and ancient historical roots. If you are someone like me who always wants to know about how things were done in years past or need explanation of certain things, you will certainly enjoy learning about the Hand of Fatima – also referred to as the Hand of Miriam or Khamsa or Hamsa.

The Fatima hand icon dates many thousand of years back. Belief in the power of the Fatima hand symbol was strongly held by both Arabs and Jews. Even though the symbols and others artifacts that represent these beliefs were different, they remained almost the same irrespective of the geographical location. Again, if you are someone who has been reading on the Hand of Fatima Meaning, you would have found out that certain people refer to it with certain peculiar names that are common to them. In most cases, the name will have some religious significance in their culture.

For example, in the Arab world, they called it the Hamsa or Khamsa. This simply meant in the Arabic language the number five as in the five fingers of the hand. The belief was that in the event when someone stares at you with evil intention they would by magical means redirect that evil eye to the sender. You may also be interested to know of the fact that the Fatima was the daughter of the prophet Mohammed who was an embodiment of virtue. This therefore meant that she represented good fortunes. Many believe that wearing jewelry with the Fatima hand symbol will protect them from the evil eye.

The fingers also represent the five pillars of the Islamic religion which every Muslim would treasures visit.

Despite this you would also have to know that the Fatima hand also represent the Ramadan observation where Muslims actually have a month of fasting. The issue has also got to do with the annual pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca. It should be important to stress in here that this activity is a very vital element of Islam. Every Muslim is required to visit there ones in their lifetime.

Another issue in the pillar has got to do with alms giving. You may like to know that one of the religions that attach most importance to alms giving is the Islam. This transcends from the belief. The other pillar that is equally important here is the daily prayers. Every Muslim is required to observe daily prayers of five times at various time intervals. The final pillar that is brought about by the Fatima hand is the profession of the faith as required by the religion.

If you believe in spiritualism or the power of mystic symbols, you would probably like to know about the hand of Fatima necklace. Every community or society has some form belief systems that shapes their lives. Before the advent of science and technology, many people had diverse ways of explaining certain occurrences in their lands. The point is that the true basis of these issues are usually questionable as compared with science.

As with many stories of this kind the hand of Fatima necklace dates back to times immemorial. The origins of the hand of Fatima symbol are lost in antiquity although some believe it originated in ancient Egypt. There are several names used to refer to the hand of Fatima, including the Hand of Miriam, Hamsa and Khamsa. The main notion has got to do with some elements of charm and luck at play. A Hand of Fatima necklace or other charm is supposed to protect the wearer against the evil eye.

Again, this is an issue that has attracted further studies even into these modern times. In most cases, historian and archeologists would try and preserve these stories for future generations. It actually feels interesting to know how things where done in years gone by. Once, the story remains mystic, it is quite difficult to provide evidential support for the best and accurate explanation of issues like hand of Fatima necklace.

While Hand of Fatima jewelry has ancient origins, it can easily be purchased even today. Commonly found in jewelry stores and markets in the Middle East and North Africa, today Hand of Fatima necklaces and other jewelry items can easily be purchased online. The Hamsa charm pictured can be bought, along with other Hand of Fatima jewelry on Amazon.

One other significant thing in the hand of Fatima necklace that is striking is that it seeks to warn people of the fact that the people you meet may not be as you may want to think. Therefore one must be careful when dealing with others. Even though these stories have existed many years back, there are so many things to learn from depending on the angle or eye with which one uses. It may be less influential today but the fact is that, it is still obeyed and observed in certain parts of the world. Many still believe that a Hand of Fatima necklace, pendant of other Fatima charm offers powerful protection against the evil eye. As with every tradition, it is always appropriate that they are kept to help in further studies in order to deduce certain vital elements from them.

Take a look at all of the Hand of Fatima jewelry items available on Amazon.

The Hand of Fatima Tattoo

Many people have beliefs in the power of tattoo symbols that form the bases for their behaviors in so many ways. These beliefs are still upheld in certain parts of the world, their influence seems to be dwindling in other parts. One such belief is that in the power of the Hand of Fatima tattoo symbol, believed to protect against the evil eye. As a Fatima tattoo symbols for such protection, tattoos featuring the Hand of Fatima have become popular among some groups. The Hamsa hand has remained a symbol of protection amongst Arabs for generations.

The Hand of Fatima tattoo has likely gained popularity by virtue of the fact that it has the magical power to protect people from the evil eye. A Hand of Fatima tattoo is considered by many to be powerful evil eye protection. You may want to know of the fact that the Hamsa simply refers to the five fingers of the hand in the Arabic language.

The Hand of Fatima symbol is known by different names in different languages and cultures. It is in reference to the daughter of Mohammed believed by all as the founder of the Islamic religion. You may also like to know that this will be called the hand of Miriam as in the case of Jewish people. It is in reference to the sister of Moses and Aaron. It is also variously known as khamsa or hamsa hand or chamsa.

Another characteristic of the hand of Fatima tattoo is that it has two thumbed fixtures. These come with symmetrical joints. In a more creative form, it comes with one thumb only. Importantly, many studies have been carried out by scholars on the development of the Fatima symbol. Archaeologists have found proof which indicates that the downward pointing protective direction of the hand of Fatima tattoo dates several years before the emergence of Judaism and Islam.

One thing that is fundamental is that many Hamsa hand symbols and charms intended to offer some form of luck or protection. Again, there has been some evolution in the Hand of Fatima designs. For instance the Israeli Hamsa or Chamsa are made of ceramics. More to the point is the fact hand lettered Hebrew prayers are also found in the center of the palm

Several other forms of the Fatima symbol are found in other places. One of these is Egypt where it is generally made of ceramics with a turquoise overlay. This is a famous representation of a protection of the evil eye.

Aside these one can get in depth knowledge of hand of Fatima tattoo from old archives and libraries. It is also important to say here that beliefs are everywhere and the amount of impact usually depends on how much attention is attached to it. If you decide to get a Hand of Fatima tattoo it would be best for you to go to the tattoo artist with a photo or drawing of the type of Hamsa hand tattoo or Fatima symbol you want as depictions of the Fatima symbol can vary widely. After all, you’ll be displaying your Fatima tattoo for a long time to come, so make sure you get it right.
